The figure
Water above Heaven: the creative force that knows how to await its moment. The clouds gather, the rain has not yet come.
What this figure illuminates
Waiting lights up the times when the right action is not to act yet. This is not passivity: it is a confident patience that nourishes and prepares itself instead of rushing.
For a decision, the figure separates waiting that is endured from waiting that is chosen. “Am I stalling, or letting the right moment ripen — and how will I recognize it?”.
The classical text
The Judgment
With sincerity, waiting shines into success. Hold firm — good fortune — and it will further you to cross the great stream.
The Image
Clouds climb the sky; the rain will fall in its own time. Seeing this, the noble person eats, drinks, and keeps good cheer while waiting.
The Six Lines
- First line
Waiting far out on the border, before the danger is near. Keep to your course, and there is no error.
- Second line
Waiting on the sand, nearer the water. Some words are spoken against you, but the end is fortunate.
- Third line
Waiting in the mud, at the very edge — you draw the danger toward you. Caution.
- Fourth line
Waiting now in blood, in real peril. Yield in time, and you climb out of the pit.
- Fifth line
A pause amid food and wine — respite in the middle of waiting. Stay firm and correct: good fortune.
- Sixth line
You have fallen into the pit. Yet three guests arrive unbidden — receive them with respect, and the end is good fortune.
