The Arousing

Hexagram 51 of the Yi Jing · Zhèn

The figure

Thunder doubled: the shock sounding twice, the jolt that wakes. The image of the tremor that recalls you to what matters.

What this figure illuminates

Shock lights up the jolts that arise and shake — a sudden event, a fright. Its function is not to destroy but to wake: to come back to yourself, to find again what truly counts.

For a decision, the figure questions your response to the shock: “does this tremor disorient me, or can it recall me to the essential and put things back in place?”.

The classical text

The Judgment

Shock brings success. The thunder comes — dread at first, then laughter and easy words. It terrifies for a hundred miles, yet the true one does not let fall the sacred cup.

The Image

Thunder rolls upon thunder, one shock after another. Seeing this, the noble person, in fear and trembling, sets their life in order and searches their faults.

The Six Lines

  1. First line

The shock arrives — first dread, then laughter and ease. Startled awake, you come through it: good fortune.

  2. Second line

Danger comes suddenly; you lose much and must climb to safety. Do not chase what is lost — in due time it returns of itself.

  3. Third line

The shock leaves you shaken and confused. Let it spur you to right action rather than freeze you, and there is no mistake.

  4. Fourth line

Amid the shocks you slump and sink into the mire — stunned into helplessness. Rousing is needed, not surrender.

  5. Fifth line

Shock upon shock, coming and going, always in danger. Yet lose nothing essential, keep to your task, and you carry on.

  6. Sixth line

Trembling, breathless, undone by the shaking of things. To act now is misfortune — but take warning while it strikes your neighbor and not yet you, and you are spared.
